SF Tsunami Swim - A 35-year legacy of LGBT athletics & community

San Francisco Tsunami Aquatics is a gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and straight-friendly masters-level club with both swim and synchronized swimming teams. From our groundbreaking debut in 1986, Tsunami has grown to be a club with 15 coaches and more than 120 members from the broader Bay Area community. We are proud to say that many of the team’s founding members are still swimming today!

The team caters to swimmers of all levels, from highly competitive athletes to those seeking a social-oriented fitness swimming experience, and we welcome brand-new beginners! Through stroke clinics and individualized attention from our coaches, each swimmer can achieve his/her personal objectives with SF Tsunami.

Over the past year of the pandemic, SF Tsunami Swim has continued to incur running costs to keep our club and community viable and strong.  These include the ongoing costs for essential infrastructure such as platforms/web services, Pacific Masters dues, and insurance.  They also include support for our series of Saturday Bootcamps, which is open to all members of our team and community.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, we've been supporting these costs without the benefit of regular membership dues or fundraising events.   We've been running a modest but consistent operating deficit each month for over a year.   In addition, we've modeled out the cost of resuming practices under likely social distancing restrictions.  We can expect our financial model will be challenged until such restrictions are ultimately lifted.

Our goal is to be ready to get back into the water as soon as the City gives us the green light to do so.   We are already seeing pools open for individual lap swimming, and we can see the light at the end of the tunnel for getting back into the water together as a team.
