Medical Mission Trip with Corner of Love

As a pediatrician, I had always hoped to be able to go on a medical mission trip to share my skills and passion as a physician in service to those in greatest need. Last summer I was blessed to finally be able to do this with Corner of Love and it was a life-changing experience!  The trip gave so much more to me than I could give back, but I was so grateful to be able to contribute even in a small way. And I get to go back again this year to serve these amazing people! 

In September, I am traveling with a team of volunteers to Costa Rica to serve refugees fleeing violence, oppression and poverty in their home countries. Children, often by themselves, are pouring over the border from Nicaragua to Costa Rica. Circumstances in their country are so dire, their families are sending the children to escape desperation and violence, sometimes with only an older sister or brother to lead the way.

It only takes $40 to equip a refugee child to enroll in school in Costa Rica - $20 for the required shoes and $20 for a backpack with supplies. Once in school, they have a little bit of normalcy and routine back into their lives, their parents can go about finding work and suitable shelter. Corner Of Love helps desperate families find a bit of peace and stability as they begin to live exiled from their homeland.

Corner of Love is a growing international mission that has been serving Nicaraguans since 1992. Today they care for refugees who are resettling in Costa Rica due to the socio-political crisis that began in 2018 that has caused over 500,000 Nicaraguans to flee the country. At their Relief Center near the Nicaragua-Costa Rica country line, they care for more than 30,000 refugees annually by providing medical, dental, and optical care, hot meals, transportation for displaced families, and many other basic needs like shoes, clothing, backpacks and educational supplies, and bibles and prayer. All services are 100% free to any person seeking refuge in Costa Rica.
