Fathers and daughters. It is a special bond that no one really can understand unless you are either a daughter, or a father of a daughter. Strong women are raised by supporting, gentle, yet firm fathers...and I was blessed to be a part of this special "club" by a larger than life man. My father had many titles. He was a husband for 51 years, a Marine, a minor league baseball player, a sportscaster for WBTV, a book publisher and beautiful writer, a world traveler of more than 70 countries, he even was a substitute teacher. He taught me how to love Agatha Christie, Sherlock Holmes, Jack Benny, and Monty Python. He gave me the gift of LOVING to travel and graced me with realizing that any "unpleasant experience" made for a great story and a great adventure. And he taught me to never give up.
However, he also was an ALS patient. And THAT is the one title that did NOT define him. He kept watching baseball, kept traveling, kept watching old movies with me. Kept on living. He never gave up. The Joe Martin ALS Foundation makes it possible for patients and their families to keep on living and without it, my family would not have had the experiences we had together during his illness. Please give to this amazing charity and be a Royal Rooter with me! My daddy was my biggest rooter and now it is my turn to root for those on April 3.
