The Asclepius Initiative is on a mission to transform health care coverage financing in the U.S. so that everyone simply has access to high-quality, affordable healthcare from birth until death. In a 2022 survey, TAI found that two-thirds of insured Kentucky respondents had to go without medical care or medications because of cost. Our strategy is to improve the health and economic security of Kentuckians through education, advocacy, and mobilization in support of a health care financing system that would provide coverage to all, regardless of age, gender, race, ethnicity, income, employment, or other arbitrary demographic factors. Our efforts include improving people's ability to choose and use the best health care coverage available to them. Along with 75% of Kentuckians surveyed, we believe in the fundamental right to health care for everyone.

Consider these facts:

  • The U.S. has the highest health care costs per capita among developed nations.
  • The U.S. has the highest maternal and infant mortality, the lowest life expectancy, and the greatest burden of chronic disease among 13 peer countries.
  • More than 5% of Kentuckians are uninsured, limiting access to essential health services.
  • Nearly half of Kentuckians get health insurance through their employer, which may prevent job changes or delay retirement.
  • High out-of-pocket costs are a barrier to care.

This system disproportionately impacts underserved populations, including low-income families, Black and Hispanic communities, and those living in rural areas. These and other marginalized groups face significant barriers to accessing health care, resulting in worse health outcomes and greater economic distress.

Those without health care coverage are less likely to:

  • Receive preventive care or treatment for chronic diseases or major health issues
  • Fill prescriptions

Those who are uninsured are also more likely to:

  • Be hospitalized for avoidable problems
  • While hospitalized, receive fewer tests and are more likely to die

Even if you do not personally have trouble obtaining or paying for care, the state of the healthcare system impacts us all:

  • Economic Stability: A healthier population leads to a more productive workforce and a stronger economy.
  • Public Health: Widespread access to health care reduces the spread of diseases and lowers overall health care costs.
  • Social Equity: Ensuring everyone has access to health care is a matter of justice and human dignity.

We believe that everyone deserves adequate health care from birth until death, regardless of where they live, work, or how much they earn. Imagine a future where healthcare decisions are made between patients and providers. For your family, your neighbors, and your health, join us in creating a fair and just healthcare system for all.
