Rural Madison's mission is to foster dialogue to promote stewardship of our community and its resources. We envision a community working together to preserve and protect the natural beauty of our mountains, woodlands and farmlands and to improve the well-being of our people, environment and economy.
Rural Madison is a citizen's organization dedicated to careful and responsible growth for Madison County that conserves and sustains our natural, cultural, and historical resources, protects the rural character of our county, and improves the general welfare of all the county's citizens.
OUR GOALS:
To educate the public on the importance of scale to maintaining the natural beauty and rural character of the county through social media, our website, articles in the local paper, and public forums.
To act as a resource to the government of the county as it addresses issues that impact the growth of the county
To create and support activities that preserve the natural, rural, and historic character of the county, such as riparian restoration and maintenance, the restoration of historic buildings, the development of local artistic and cultural resources.
To encourage the development of community in the county, through this organization and through satellite activities, based on a shared vision of cooperation, fellowship, enjoyment of diversity, and an environment supportive of the fullest development of each person's potential To aid stakeholders in the pursuit of chemical free farming and gardening.
To increase production and consumption of healthy local food grown with regenerative agricultural methods.
To promote a healthy and vibrant community (i.e., civic responsibility and engagement, recycling, race relations, responsible economic development & jobs creation, etc.).
To facilitate the exchange of information and resources between like-minded individuals and organizations.
OUR PROJECTS:
Rural Madison is an active partner in the community, working in alliance with other service-minded organizations. Our current projects include the Poverty Taskforce (http://poverty.ruralmadison.org) , featuring the Community Action Poverty Simulation (CAPS) program and the Stone Soup workforce development project. Other projects include the annual Madison County Green & Clean Day (http://ruralmadison/events.org), the Madison County Broadband Committee (http://broadband.madcova.org), Mayo Yowell Community Garden, Kids Garden at the Madison Learning Center, Learn to Grow at Waverly Yowell Elementary School and our annual Candidates Night Forum.
"Skyline Community Action Partnership affirms that Rural Madison's Mayo Yowell Community Garden "provides an invaluable service to the residents of Madison County... we sometimes take it for granted that everyone has a garden spot in their backyard. Unfortunately, that is not so. Providing the 'Community Garden' for area families to grow their own fresh vegetables and teach their children about what it takes to grow fresh food from seed to harvest is a wonderful undertaking."
"Rural Madison is a constant, local presence advocating for the things that make Madison so quietly outstanding--clean air and water, local food, a voice for everyone in local politics, and a place where community is more than just a buzz word. They are our eyes, our mouths, our hearts, and, sometimes, our brains!" ~Beth B.
"Rural Madison's Candidates Night Forums are invaluable." ~Kit J., Reva

"We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your wonderful gifts and contributions during the 2016 holiday season. Through Social Services to "adopt" a person or a family for Thanksgiving or Christmas, 230 of your neighbors were provided gifts, food, and money to make their Holiday season a happy one." ~Tiffany W., Madison CSA Coordinator
