OUR RESILENCE IS SHOWING!

GRIOT Circle is a community of proud and powerful older adults of color who have faced and overcome many barriers in their lives. For more than 27 years, we have been a space of belonging, dignity, and justice for our LGBTQ+ elders. We celebrate our diversity and our history every June Pride month and GIVE OUT DAY campaign.  

The Aging and Health Report; Disparities and Resilience among Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Older Adults, found that LGBT elders of color cope with significant disparities across areas related to physical and mental health, including depression, diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure and HIV/AIDS. That same study also found that 39% have acutely thought of suicide and 53% feel isolated from others.  The report went on to reference that LGBT elders of color are seldom offered services in a culturally competent manner and, as such, are more fearful to seeking the services they need.  This, in turn, fosters a culture of isolation.  

We are not alone. We are here for each other. We have created programs and services that nourish our minds, bodies, and souls. We are resilient, we are visionary, we are reborn. This is our motto and our mission.
