About the Goose Creek Association

Founded in 1970 to fight the discharge of sewage effluent into Goose Creek, today the Goose Creek Association (GCA) is involved in a number of critical issues on both local and state levels to maintain and improve the quality of the Goose Creek watershed that feeds into the Potomac and Chesapeake watersheds through:

  • Maintenance and improvement of stream water quality in the Goose Creek watershed through stream monitoring and riparian buffers.
  • Advocacy of conservation easements and purchase of development rights programs in both Loudoun and Fauquier.
  • Support of the designation of historic rural villages and preservation of farmland in Loudoun and Fauquier.
  • Protection of rural roads through the formation of Cromwell's Run and Little River Historic Districts in Fauquier County and the Beaverdam Creek Historic Roadways District in Loudoun County.

The Association works with an active board charged with monitoring stream water quality, proposed developments, legislation, zoning changes, and other actions that have a potential impact on the environment and quality of life in this region, and taking steps through educational forums to forestall or encourage these changes. We actively support the work of other like-minded regional groups. We work to unite with the many conservation and preservation efforts to provide a unified voice for conservation/preservation-minded citizens in the area.

Stewardship Programs at Goose Creek Association

A group of volunteers plants trees as part of our Goose Creek Challenge.

At the Goose Creek Association, we are committed to preserving and protecting the Goose Creek watershed and its surrounding areas. Our stewardship programs focus on monitoring water quality, restoring riparian buffers, and organizing clean-up efforts to ensure the health and vitality of our waterways.

Chemical, Bacterial, & Benthic Water Monitoring

Our water monitoring program plays a crucial role in maintaining the integrity of the water quality in Goose Creek. Given that much of northern Fauquier and Western Loudoun counties, as well as parts of Fairfax and Leesburg, rely on the Goose Creek watershed and its aquifers for drinking water, it's imperative that we keep these water sources clean and healthy.

Riparian Buffer Planting - The Goose Creek Challenge

The Goose Creek Challenge is our comprehensive riparian buffer planting program. Riparian buffers are strips of vegetation along waterways that help stabilize stream banks, filter pollutants, and provide habitat for wildlife. Through the Goose Creek Challenge, we plant trees, shrubs, and grasses along the banks of Goose Creek and its tributaries, enhancing the health of the entire ecosystem.

Canoe River Clean-up

Our annual canoe river clean-up is a community-driven effort to remove litter and debris from Goose Creek. Volunteers from the community join us in paddling along the creek, collecting trash, and helping to keep our waterways clean and beautiful.

How You Can Help

To continue performing this critical work, we rely on the support of generous donors like you. Your donations help fund our stewardship programs, allowing us to monitor water quality, plant riparian buffers, and organize clean-up efforts. Together, we can ensure that Goose Creek remains a healthy and vibrant ecosystem for generations to come.
