CPLC De Colores opened its doors in 1985 out of community-identified need for a domestic violence shelter that would provide an environment that was culturally and linguistically appropriate for monolingual Spanish speaking survivors and their children.
The shelter and community-based programs, located in Central Phoenix, provide an average of 1,000 survivors each year with a safe and secure environment where they can recover from the devastating effects of abuse as they acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to become self-sufficient and break the cycle of violence. Services include legal support; assistance with housing, employment, and financial stability; youth services; and psychosocial support.
Maricela came to De Colores after she had been physically abused by her husband, who abandoned her and took her children. De Colores provided Maricela with her immediate physical needs-a roof over her head, a place to sleep, food, toiletries, and clothes. But even more importantly, De Colores provided legal help so she could regain custody of her three children, who joined her at the shelter. Together, Maricela and her children learned to heal from the abuse of the past.
During her stay, she completed a financial education course and opened her first bank account. She gained the strength and confidence to use her unique baking skills to start a custom cake business. Soon, Maricela was earning enough money to leave the shelter and begin a new life with her children. Today, Maricela is a successful entrepreneur and a new homeowner.
"Thanks to De Colores, I was able to leave a miserable, abusive life to start a dignified life with my children." -Maricela, CPLC client
