People born after 1990 are 4x more likely to develop colorectal cancer than those born in the two generations before. By 2030, colorectal cancer is on track to be the #1 cancer killer in those under 50. With your help, we can change the trajectory!
We are a Louisville-based, 501(c)3 nonprofit organization with one goal in mind: eliminating preventable colon cancer death and suffering in Kentucky and Southern Indiana!
Since our inception in 2003, we have worked in our community to promote on-time colon cancer screening and save lives. Our current programs include community education, digital outreach, public advocacy, health systems improvement, and survivor support.
The Colon Cancer Prevention Project started in 2004, when only 1 in 3 Kentuckians were getting life-saving colon cancer screenings. Dr. Whitney Jones, a Louisville gastroenterologist, decided to begin the Colon Cancer Prevention Project after diagnosing multiple patients with late-stage colon cancer in a single week. Now, about 70% of Kentuckians are getting screened and the incidence rate is down more than 25%.
Kentucky is now nationally renowned for its work to increase screening rates, which includes a statewide screening program for low-income, uninsured people.
The Colon Cancer Prevention Project led the advocacy for the screening program and continues to work as a state-wide partner. We are growing grassroots awareness committees across the state and host a survivor support program. CCPP provides support for the entire nation in their efforts to improve screening rates.
