For over a century and a half, the bell toll from atop the clock tower at Louisville's Cave Hill Cemetery kept rhythm with the pace of the Highlands. Greeting hundreds of thousands of families that have traversed the gate, or the passerby that suddenly realized the time of day with its hourly ring, our bells have a significant history. Whether it be the timely toll to announce the hour or a knell to pronounce the passage of a procession, the cadence of our bells are symbolic to the cycle of life.
Unfortunately, age has rendered our entrance bell silent; and, our clocks are slowly becoming inoperable.
The Cave Hill Heritage Foundation seeks your support to restore this iconic symbol of the Cemetery's history. Full restoration of the clock and bell include:
In addition to this element of the building's restoration, we are also working on the upper and lower interior floors, restoring the antiquity of the structure and its prominence. Repairs to the hardwood floors, wooden paneling, walls, and ceilings will create a wonderfully maintained element of Cave Hill Cemetery's formative history that has graced the entrance since 1880.
We invite you to support this tremendous project and restore the rhythm of the Highlands.
