Theatre of the Oppressed NYC

TONYC partners with communities confronting systemic oppression to inspire transformative action through theatre. We build community, solidarity, and awareness; enable actors to become activists; and influence policy-making through participatory theatre. Our work is guided by core principles: that any discussion of a social problem should center those directly affected; that theatre has immense potential for transformative change; and that community-based art and activism can influence policy.

Over 9 years, TONYC has developed over 100 original plays, presented more than 325 free performances, and partnered with over 25 institutions. Over 825 actors have been guided through the production of plays addressing the systems of oppression that directly impact their lives.
