The mission of the Theatre Tallahassee is to create educational and inspiring theatrical productions for the community; produce quality performances; provide experience and growth for performers, directors, and designers; and maintain a central meeting place for the community. Theatre Tallahassee welcomes the entire community to participate on stage or behind the scenes. Veteran performers often share the stage with novices and volunteers are needed in all areas of production from set and costume design to prop and stage crews. Theatre Tallahassee produces ten high-quality productions annually, provides senior education through "The Acting Up Players", an acting group for adults over 50 who participate in classes, community outreach, and a matinee performance series, and hosts educational workshops, for children through adults, that will run throughout the year.
Theatre Tallahassee has been serving the community since 1949, as a community theatre providing professional-caliber theatre for the Big Bend Region of Florida, as well as Thomas and Grady Counties in Georgia. Theatre Tallahassee strives to include the entire community in its theatrical performances and activities, not only as audience members but as artists and volunteers. Theatre Tallahassee averages 350 volunteers annually who serve as actors, directors, designers, and front of house volunteers, along with the 17,000 patrons who attend productions each season.
Community theatre contributes to the social capital of a community by developing skills, community spirit, and artistic sensibilities of those who participate, whether as producers or audience-members. Theatre Tallahassee fosters a creative spirit by building enriching experiences and facilitating volunteer diversity in race, ethnicity, age, and physical abilities. When choosing productions for each season, consideration is given not only to shows that our patrons will enjoy watching but also shows that serve our actors by various cast sizes, genders, ethnicity, and ages.
Live theatre is a special relationship between artists and audiences sharing a common creative experience. The theatre uses this medium as a way of strengthening the common bonds of the community by engaging participation in theater and further developing the artistic excellence of Theatre Tallahassee as a whole.
