Greater Washington Community Foundation

The Community Foundation for the National Capital Region is the largest funder of nonprofit organizations in the Washington region.  We house and manage more than 800 charitable giving funds, each one unique in its focus and impact. We also work to make our community a place where equity, access and opportunity are available to all. The Foundation pursues this goal by investing in effective safety net, education, and workforce development programs, helping low-income families and individuals gain the knowledge, skills and security they need to be economically stable and engaged in community life.  

One of our largest efforts is the Neighbors in Need Fund, founded in late 2008 to respond to the urgent needs of those affected most by the recession. Over the course of the Fund's existence, it has helpled more than 100,000 people and provided grants totalling more than $4.7 million to nonprofit organizations across the Washington region. Supporters of the Neighbors in Need Fund have helped safety-net groups increase their services at time when others cut back. You can also support some of the most effective nonprofit organizations helping low-income children, youth and families in Montgomery County, Md. by giving to The Sharing Montgomery Fund. Housed at our local affiliate, The Community Foundation for Montgomery County, the Fund has awarded over $2.1 million in grants to some of the best community-based nonprofit organizations serving vulnerable residents of the county.
