Our work focuses on the inextricable linkage between our nation's food and transportation fuel systems and the need to make them more sustainable through the reduction of waste and the implementation of alternatives to conventional solutions. After shelter, food and transportation are the two largest expenditures for Americans, making it vital that the effort to increase their sustainability is put into action at every level of our society. 

Americans waste 31%, or 133 billion pounds, of available food at the retail and consumer levels. Producing enough calories to meet this level of waste was valued at over $161 billion in 2010. These amounts are hard to digest when one also considers that nearly 1 in 6 Americans is food insecure, meaning they lack the resources to procure adequate supplies of food.

We can do better than that. 

Americans waste 3.8 million gallons of fuel every day just by idling their vehicles. That is equivalent to 40,000 tons of CO2 emissions, 200,000 barrels of foreign oil, or over 7 million dollars of waste. 

We can do better than that. 

Simple actions such as sharing a plate with a friend while out at dinner or turning off the car engine while waiting to pick up your child from school can make a huge impact on the waste generated in our food and transportation fuel sectors. Reducing waste allocates valuable resources to more productive purposes, whether they be the nutrients in an apple, the natural resources extracted from the ground to produce fuel, or the dollars saved by making smarter decisions.
