Styx River Volunteer Fire Department Inc

In 1980, a small group of community residents recognized a need for fire protection in this rural area of Baldwin County, Alabama. The department started with old donated vehicles and fire gear and housed the equipment in members barns and sheds scattered throughout the community. Today, with the help of County tax revenue, Styx River VFD has been able to purchase a modern fleet of vehicles.

As the department grew, it was assigned a 95 square mile fire district. A large portion of the district includes forest land, sometimes a very difficult and dangerous fire to control. Many homes are scattered throughout the wooded area, requiring specialized firefighting equipment to reach these homes. 

Unpaved roads and rough terrain takes its toll on equipment but when the call is received, vehicles must roll despite these conditions. The challenge is to keep this equipment in working order and have the dollars available to pay for the repairs and upkeep. Donations toward that end would be welcome .
