"It was an ordinary enough day at the local animal shelter where I worked. All of a sudden, an older couple burst into the reception area sobbing uncontrollably. Through the tears, they managed to explain that their house went through foreclosure and they could no longer afford to keep their two senior dogs. They had adopted Bella as a puppy from this shelter and had adopted Nancy when she was 2 years old. It was clear that Bella had an infection the family could not afford to treat. After 8 years of a wonderful family life, these two sweet girls had to be surrendered due to their family's financial situation.
