$50,000 Goal

This Giving Tuesday, we invite you to join the Southern Center for Human Rights in our mission to tear down the walls of oppression and inequality that have stood for far too long.

From exposing inhumane conditions in prisons and jails to debunking junk science in the courts, SCHR has been at the forefront of the fight against injustice for decades. It is through your support, and generosity, that we are able to chip away, brick-by-brick, at a system built to harm, not heal.

Equality, Dignity, and Justice for All

Today, we need your help to raise $50,000 ensure a just future for all!

Thanks to the generosity and commitment of Adria and C. Allen Garrett, all donations up to $12,500 will be matched, doubling your impact.

Your support helps us to:

Challenge inhumane conditions in prisons and jails.

  • SCHR has led several class-action lawsuits challenging solitary confinement practices in Georgia’s prisons and jails, where people are held in isolation twenty-three hours a day. Between 2019 and 2022, SCHR reached settlement agreements with both the Special Management Unit (SMU) at Georgia Diagnostic and Classification Prison and the South Fulton Jail, granting our clients additional out-of-cell time and greater access to psychological care. In both cases, federal judges found local and state correctional leaders in contempt of our settlement agreements, and on January 3, 2024, a federal magistrate judge shared in his ruling that the Fulton County Sheriff “can do more—indeed, must do more—to meet the terms of his agreement with Plaintiffs.” These rulings have allowed us to extend our monitoring period so we can continue fighting to protect people in solitary confinement.

Provide critical reentry support to our clients.

  • SCHR continues to help clients like Ms. Sandra Turner return home to the families that love and need them. Ms. Turner was an accomplished educator before her life took a turn due to substance use. Her illness led to multiple incarcerations, but her last one was like no other. In 2020, she was arrested on drug charges and entered prison pregnant at the height of the pandemic. Months later, she gave birth to her only child while still incarcerated. The stress and trauma of being away from her daughter were only worsened by the toddler’s diagnosis of a rare form of brain cancer. Through all of this, Ms. Turner fought to be reunited with her daughter by doing everything in her power to demonstrate her readiness to return home. This included completing two treatment courses and serving as a GED instructor for other women looking to jumpstart their education. Due to her own tenacity, and with the support of SCHR’s dedicated staff, Ms. Turner was granted parole and is now home with her daughter, where she belongs.

And so much more!

This is our moment. Donate today and join us as we build the just futures that we all deserve!
