Pine Castle, the Birthplace of Orlando

Travel to what is now the “Tourist Capital of the World” began in 1838 when Fort Gatlin was built on the north shore of Lake Conway. An area which later became known as "Pine Castle, Florida."

In 1821, when Florida became a United States Territory, it was thought that the interior of the peninsula could never be settled because of the swamps and mosquitos. But the men who were sent to Fort Gatlin during the Seminole Indian Wars realized that the lakes were pure, the surrounding pine barrens and oak hammocks were inviting, and the grass filled ranges spreading out to the south were ideal for cattle raising.

The area became known as “Pine Castle” when Will Wallace Harney, who had homestead land on the western shore of middle Lake Conway, built a fanciful house of pine and began writing articles for the Cincinnatti Commercial which he began, “Dateline: Pine Castle.”

Today, the Pine Castle Historical Society is developing a hometown history center to memorialize the crucial role Pine Castle and its pioneers played in the development of Orlando and Orange County. Located on the entrance corridor to the “City Beautiful,” the Pine Castle History Center will serve as a small but significant introduction to historic Orlando, and remind both residents and visitors that the “Cinderella Castle” owes a huge debt of gratitude to the almost-forgotten “Pine Castle.”

To date, the Pine Castle Historical Society has helped to raise over $300,000 for development of the Pine Castle History Center. We have also published numerous books, pamphlets, and videos documenting the unique history of Pine Castle, Florida.

Our appreciation goes out to our many supporters, including individuals, businesses, organizations, and the Orange County government. Learn more about our organization and donors at:
