Houses have roofs and walls, homes have furniture. Yet for many formerly displaced families and individuals the cost of furnishing even a small apartment can be unsurmountable.

We assist Central Indiana social service organizations, agencies, and businesses help individuals and families who have survived a disaster, tragedy, or other hardships (re)establish their own residence by filling it with new and gently used furniture donated by members of the Central Indiana community. The clients we support together have been affected by homelessness, domestic violence, mental or physical health issues, unemployment, addiction, genocidal regimes, natural disasters (fire, flood, tornado}, incarceration, and above all, poverty.

Imagine being a veteran struggling to overcome the effects of PTSD and reunite with his family, a young mom trying to establish a safe and secure home for her/their self and her/their children, or an addict in recovery working hard to build a sober life. After counseling and classes and job training, you’re excited to move your family into a small apartment - until you realize you don’t have enough money saved or bring home enough after taxes and other deductions to furnish it and still buy groceries and pay the rent. Angry and resentful that your coworkers get to sit on a comfy couch, eat at a table, and sleep on a mattress when they get home, and sad that your kids are too embarrassed to invite friends over, you go ahead and spend the rent money to have those things too. Now you’re so worried about eviction that you can’t concentrate at work and end up getting fired, evicted, and arrested for trying to shoplift dinner for your kids.

In 2024 our work prevented that scenario from playing out for 232 adults and 252 minors in 208 individual and family households. With your help we can double, triple, even quadruple those numbers in 2025; the need is definitely there, with many of our referral partners and several newly-formed or new-to-the-area organizations building and/or purchasing additional transitional and permanent supportive housing in and around Marion County (Indiana). All needing places for residents to sit, sleep, eat, and store their belongings.
