In 1999, Lisa Norwood was a divorce single mother of 3 sons searching for an organization that would provide educational support for the development of rearing and mentoring for her sons. She had no family in Georgia and her sons desired and needed positive male role models in their life. She discovered the issues of tomorrow are part of her life today, by raising sons alone. Ms. Norwood had personal experiences with the numerous social and economic factors that contribute to the problems facing single parents. It was her personal experience by raising 3 sons and limited community resources for single parenting.
Being employed as a supervisor in a juvenile court system she was aware of numerous programs for boys already in the system but nothing to prevent them from becoming a first-time offender. After witnessing an extensively high volume of males being raised by females alone in the juvenile system, it became apparent that there was a need for a support organization.
Extensive research was conducted throughout the Atlanta metro area of the needed services and the response was overwhelmingly in favor to support group organization. She stepped out on faith, resigned from her management position at juvenile court and founded, Mothers Raising Sons, Inc. in 1999.
The mission of the Mothers Raising Sons, Inc. is to establish, educate, enthuse and empower at-risk male youth, young men and females raising sons in our nation’s community to make positive life choices that enable them to maximize their personal potential.
To provide the boys to men the foundation, structure and independence needed to achieve their potential of becoming productive and success men for their family and community.
MRS establish needs for the family, educate the minds for success, enthuse purposes, and empower the talents and gifts for a brighter future.
MRS meet the challenges of a boy being raised by a single female to adulthood through a coordinated, progressive series of programs and services.
Nationally 95,000 juvenile offenders are in juvenile justice system; average cost $97,000+ a year to incarcerate.
It is cost effective to spend time and a little money now than a juvenile to enter the juvenile justice system; that can be a pipeline for jail or prison.
