John Wesley Powell River History Museum

A nonprofit organization

The John Wesley Powell River History Museum celebrates the unique history of river systems that carved the landscape found on the Colorado Plateau.  Exhibits explore the cultures and landscapes shaped by the region.  Education programming encourages kids and adults to go outside to interact with and learn about our unique environment.  Events offer opportunities for rural Southeastern Utah, our River Runner friends, and those who find us on their way through the area to access arts and culture.  We seek to be an internationally recognized, accredited museum serving those who, like us, have a stake in the natural wonder that is the Colorado Plateau.

Since 1990, the museum has worked to preserve the history of the rivers on the Colorado Plateau for local residents in the rural community of Green River, the River Runner communities and tourists who travel through Southeastern Utah. In recent years, the organization has strived to create a new identity, seeking ways to offer meaningful programming, partnerships, and exhibits that celebrate river history and help tell the stories of the people and landscapes. John Wesley Powell, as our organization’s namesake, constantly reminds and motivates us by his example of bold exploration and dedication to discovery.

We hope you’ll support us as we keep these principles in mind, as we continue to shape a bold modern museum rooted in education, preservation, and professionalism.
