The Challenges

  • Only 2% of the elementary and middle school students participate in orchestra in Arizona public schools. At the high school level this number drops to 1%.
  • 79% of schools spend less than $1 per year per student for curricular support in arts education.
  • Music private lessons cost about $60/hour in Arizona. Despite our students' drive to learn and succeed, Harmony Project Phoenix students can’t afford lessons.

The Solution

Harmony Project Phoenix place low-to-moderate income students in the path to success, by helping families to remove the barriers that prevent their children to achieve success in music, in school and in life.

Each child who enters the Harmony Project Phoenix is entitled to:

  • Instrument music lessons: students are enrolled in 4.5 hours week of group classes.
  • An instrument: as long as students remain in the program, they have an instrument to take home and use  as their own.
  • Performance opportunities: The orchestras and small ensembles hold 6 concerts throughout the year, with additional performances routinely held at functions for civic groups and other organizations.
  • One daily complimentary meal provided by our partner St. Mary’s Food Bank.

Why Harmony Project Phoenix?

Our mission is to develop children as ambassadors of peace and hope. We use the practice of music as the context for students to develop the values of discipline, collaboration and respect.

Community engagement is a key component of the program. In order to be a recipient of the Harmony Project Phoenix scholarship, students must participate in at least one civic engagement activity a year.
