Harrison Public Library Foundation Inc

For over 100 years, the Harrison Public Library has been an educational, recreational, and cultural hub in our Town that is a free resource for children, teenagers, senior citizens, unemployed neighbors, small businesses, and everyone in between. 

Unfortunately, the Library’s future is at risk given that its 1960’s and 1980’s infrastructure is unable to service our 21st century community. This should not be a surprise, since we have massively underinvested: Harrison ranks 39 of the 42 surrounding communities that we surveyed in terms of the amount of major capital improvements made to library infrastructure.

We are excited to announce that this problem will soon be fixed in June 2014, when construction will begin on major renovations at the Downtown Library. We are more than 2/3 toward our goal of raising $3.6 million and are asking you to please give generously to this once-in-a-generation Capital Campaign. Planned initiatives include: 

- Renovating the Adult Area to double comfortable seating space and significantly increase the amount of natural light.  The space will be configured to allow for easier access to periodicals, books and media and the expansion of resources for job seekers and entrepreneurs.   

- Doubling the Children's Area from 1,600 to 3,200 square feet to accommodate the increasing demand for children’s programming.  This soundproofed area will include space for story-telling, computer stations, an arts & craft area, and games.  The new configuration will provide enhanced safety and security.                                                                     
 

- Transforming 1,400 square feet of unused, lower-level storage space into a brand new Teen Center, which will be an incredible environment for teenagers to work collaboratively, create, and socialize.                                                            

- Increasing the number of computers from 12 to 41 and adding a Computer Classroom that will provide space for technology training, employment seminars, and ESL classes.                                                        

- Modernizing the Community Room by adding improved lighting, state-of-the-art AV equipment, a small stage, and TV studio functionality to host musical performances, lectures, art exhibits, and film screenings.
