Over 27% of Arizona's children live in poverty and 18% of the state’s total population, including 257,200 children, do not have health insurance.  All of this affects our state's overall health and progress.  Helping Families In Need (HFIN) directly addresses these problems by reaching out to eligible families who need assistance in applying for healthcare benefits and food and nutrition support through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).  When families are healthier and have access to healthy foods, our entire state benefits through lower healthcare costs and by helping students succeed in school.  After all, it's hard to learn when you are hungry.  And preventive visits for medical care are less costly than emergency room visits.  HFIN’s bilingual/bicultural Community Health Workers are very successful in reaching out to and engaging families who might not otherwise seek help.  HFIN is helping Arizona residents move towards better well-being -one family at a time.
