Meet Sanchez

Sanchez after recoveryWe are on-call 24/7/365 to rescue animals from abuse and neglect — including dogs like Sanchez. He was one of the 55 puppies and dogs we found in Stone County, MO in January.

They were all starving and suffering from hypothermia, tied or chained, without adequate access to food, water, or shelter from the frigid elements. Tragically, the remains of 15 other dogs and five goats were discovered, having already succumbed to neglect.

When Sanchez arrived at HSMO, he was bone-thin weighing only 39 pounds. He also had parasites and was developing an upper respiratory infection.

He spent two months at HSMO recovering from his ordeal. He needed meds for his infections and a special diet to gain weight. He gained nearly 30 pounds in our shelter! And as he healed, his sweet personality started shining through! Finally, in March, Sanchez got his second chance at a happy and healthy life.

Meet Prada

Prada waiting to be adoptedAt HSMO, we are dedicated to second chances for all animals that arrive at our doors — large and small — including horses like Prada. Prada is a filly who was born at Longmeadow Rescue Ranch after the Benton County rescue last February.

Our Animal Cruelty Task Force rescued Prada’s mom, Hermes, just in time. When Hermes was rescued, she was in bad shape. She was underweight, suffering from a heavy parasite load, and covered in cockleburs.

Hermes was immediately taken to our Longmeadow Rescue Ranch for rehabilitation. It was there that our staff discovered that she was pregnant. And because of the severe neglect Hermes experienced, we weren't sure if her baby would make it. But Prada was born in April last year and was a wonderful, healthy baby.

Horse rehabilitation is lengthy and expensive. As one of the nation’s most comprehensive centers for equine and farm animal rescue, we provide the dedicated attention these animals require — no matter how long it takes.

Prada flourished under the watchful eyes of her mother and human caretakers. And in the fall, Prada was adopted!

Meet Ginger

Our goal is to place 100% of adoptable animals while providing veterinary care, enrichment and one-on-one attention to every animal in our care — including cats like Ginger.

Ginger came to HSMO as a stray. Her tail was badly injured, and it looked as though it had been shut in a door. Our veterinary and shelter staff got to work right away treating Ginger’s injury. It was determined that Ginger’s life would be greatly improved if her tail was amputated. After her surgery, she went to a foster family to recuperate and receive lots of love and attention. She flourished in their home!

HSMO is here for animals no matter how long it takes. After months of care at the shelter and then with a foster family, Ginger finally got the second chance she desperately deserves!
