We Need a New Library: A Larger Space for Community Connection
We have long known that the Truckee library is too small. Built in 1975, when Truckee’s population was 2,000, the library is now tasked with serving a diverse and growing community of 20,000 people! We don’t have the space for needed technologies, meaningful connection among community members, highly requested work and meeting areas, or programming to meet the needs of our community. We're working to build a space that will support education, workforce development, community and connection for everyone in our community - from seniors to toddlers - this new library will serve our entire community.
More than Books: Endorsed by over 35 local nonprofits!
Public libraries are community hubs that bring people together and close the opportunity gap by connecting people to essential services and resources. Demonstrating this broad impact, over 35 local nonprofit and organizations have endorsed the new Truckee Regional library project.
When you support building a new library, you support all of the opportunities this space will offer!
“Libraries are critical access points for community members of all types and create a place for connection and community building. Just as importantly, for lower income community members or for people who are marginalized due to their housing status, mental health issues or substance use disorders, having facilities like libraries where people can access free internet, information, and relevant services and learning opportunities is critical.” - Nevada County Behavioral Health Department
“When it snows three feet, and we can do nothing but be indoors, we need a community space to meet and do meaningful, productive activities. A place to meet for our wonderful book club and to grow the minds of the people we serve.” Tahoe Ability Program
“This new library could easily serve a vital disaster relief role in support of fire, police, and health authorities in emergency situations such as wildfires, poor air quality, earthquakes, power outages, and other extreme weather.” Community Collaborative of Tahoe Truckee
“Sierra Senior Services knows that improving and expanding the library in Truckee will make it a great asset for the many seniors in our community.” Sierra Senior Services Board of Directors
The Next Chapter: What Comes Next for the New Library Project?
FOTL has been the driving force for the , not only in fundraising but also in maintaining a comprehensive overview of the project and facilitating collaboration among the Core Partners (Core Partners = Nevada County, Town of Truckee and FOTL). This project is inherently non-linear, and FOTL's distinctive role as the sole partners dedicated to supporting the library positions it to navigate through various challenging stages simultaneously.
In 2024, FOTL's efforts will intensify as we focus on advancing three key priorities for the new library project: Pre-Construction, Project Funding and Community Engagement & Awareness. Learn more by reading our 2023 Project Report here.
