Friends of Summit County Search and Rescue

The Summit County Search and Rescue (SAR) team performs work behind the scenes to keep our community members safe by searching for and providing aid to people who are in distress or imminent danger. If you are lost or injured and require rescue in Summit County, the people that will come to your aid is the Summit County Search and Rescue (SAR) team. The SAR team faces a huge range of search, rescue and recovery scenarios, including: swift water, high-angle (rope rescue on terrain in excess of 60 degrees slope), rescue and recovery where vehicle has left the road, deployment of snowmobiles, snow cats, ATVs, UTVs, boats and ROVs (underwater unmanned drone).  They are responsible for all search, rescue and recovery in the forests and wilderness areas of Summit County, including out of bounds search and rescue at Summit County ski areas, covering 1,882 square miles – an area nearly twice the size of Rhode Island and almost as large as Delaware.

The Search and Rescue team needs your financial support to ensure that it can continue to provide services at the extremely high quality level it has in the past.  County budgets have been hit hard by the pandemic while outdoor activity has increased substantially - resulting in a situation where there are fewer resources and more missions.  While the team is coordinated and supported by the Summit County Sheriff, the team is entirely made up of volunteers who donate their time and personal equipment to protect the lives, health and safety of Summit County residents, guests and visitors.  What's more, Summit County Search and Rescue does not charge for their services.

The Friends of Summit County Search and Rescue was formed to raise funds for this critical organization– insuring that they have the equipment and resources they need to be effective and safe in the field.
