The Etowah County Animal Shelter mission is to provide the most humane housing available for animals that are housed at its facility.  The Shelter is operated pursuant to Alabama law mandating the county to provide a “pound” for animals found roaming at large without proof of inoculation from rabies.  The County’s mission is not only to meet the requirements of Alabama law but to also go beyond mandate operations and provide for a progressive shelter operation.  The shelter will be operated under the guidelines that all adoptable animals will be given the chance to find homes.  The Shelter’s goal is to adopt out as many animals as possible given the constraints of limited space, resources and the condition of “impounded” animals.

Etowah County Commission opened the shelter in order to provide safe and adequate housing. Since doing so, the shelter has lauched an Adoptions program as well as a Wellness program. However, the shelter is budgeted to provide only the necessities. Therefore, we rely heavily on donations for diagnostic testing and vaccinations so that we can then provide healthy animals to the public for adoption.
