Our Mission
Preserve. Educate. Share.
The CVC Legacy Project serves to preserve the photojournalistic legacy of Charlie Cole, making his works accessible for research and presentation; telling stories through exhibitions, and publications of images, and perpetuating his dedication to truth seeking and truth telling. It promotes the continuation of Charlie’s vision and the continued use of his work.
In tandem, the project allows us the opportunity to share the legacy structure with other artists, photographers and estate managers so they too can tend to their collections. By creating a comprehensive legacy plan, we can teach classes, offer workshops and provide best practices guidelines.
Description
Located in Seattle's International District in the historical INS immigration building now called the INScape Arts and Cultural Building, the CVC Legacy Project's studio is breaking ground to be one of the regions first digital archiving projects modeled after the Joan Mitchell CALL (Creating A Living Legacy). The project was born out of immediate necessity; the sudden death of Charlie Cole, an international war photographer and photojournalist, best known for his Tank Man image of the young man standing in front of three tanks in Tiananmen Square the early morning after a government led massacre, becoming an iconic image of peaceful protest to violent oppression. Like many artists and photographers, his time was spent more in his work than organizing his legacy. Our job is rectify that legacy as well as help others establish best practices to take on the task themselves, be it through workshops, classes and/or legacy best practice guidlines.
