About the Farm
Coastal Roots Farm is a nonprofit Jewish community farm and education center where we practice organic farming, share our harvest with those who lack access, deliver unique farm-based, environmental education, and foster inclusive spaces for people of all ages and backgrounds to come together to learn about food, farming, and Jewish tradition, and engage in ways that catalyze a healthier, more vibrant community and a more sustainable future for our region. The Farm is located in Encinitas, California, on land we recognize as indigenous to the Kumeyaay and Luiseño peoples.
Each year, the Farm:
Grows 80,000+ pounds of organic fruits, vegetables, herbs, and eggs and distributes it to 40,000 individuals including 70% which is donated to food insecure community members.
Reaches nearly 10,000 youth through environmental education including half who come on scholarship.
Welcomes 5,000+ community members of all backgrounds with multigenerational and multicultural programs including Jewish agricultural festivals and holidays, workshops, volunteering, and more.
This is how we "Nourish Community."
Our 17-Acre Classroom
The Farm’s Environmental STEM, Nutrition Education & Workforce Development Programs provide San Diego County youth with barrier-free, outdoor environmental science and nutrition education, workforce development, and career pathway experiences including Field Trips (Pre-K – 12th), Career Pathway Experiences (6th – 8th), After School on the Farm and Seasonal Farm Camps (Pre-K – 5th), a Counselors-in-Training Program (6th – 12th), and Farm Internships (7th - college).
The Farm’s educational programs provide youth with a “cradle-to-career" curriculum and nature-based opportunities to explore, discover new passions, and build real-world academic, social, and emotional skills. Students engage in hands-on learning, gain leadership experience, and develop essential STEM skills for succeeding in tomorrow’s workforce.
Providing Equitable Access
The Farm strives to reduce barriers to participation by ensuring its educational programs are accessible to all, regardless of ability to pay. While the Farm’s educational programming is open to all students from San Diego County and beyond, the Farm actively partners with communities across San Diego County that have historically been underserved to participate in Farm programs at no cost. The majority of the students who receive program scholarships and bus transportation to the Farm are from BIPOC communities, live in park-poor areas, and have limited opportunities to engage in quality, outdoor education.
The Environmental STEM, Nutrition & Workforce Development Programs serve more than 10,000 youth, including 50% low-income and underserved students each year.
