One of the leading American architects of the early twentieth century, Cass Gilbert (1859-1934) is remembered as the architect of the Woolworth Building and the U.S. Supreme Court. Though he was based in New York when he designed many of his best-known buildings, Gilbert began his career in St. Paul, Minnesota. He launched his practice in 1883, the year the Northern Pacific Railway completed its line to the west coast. When he relocated his office to New York in 1900, he drew upon what he had learned in the Midwest to continue a diverse and wide-ranging architectural career that spanned East and West.
The Cass Gilbert Society publishes a newsletter, maintains an authoritative website, and sponsors lectures and tours to promote interest and awareness and advance knowledge and scholarship of Cass Gilbert's architecture.
