This Arizona Gives Day
Amerind offers all communities a better understanding of our past, and inspires us to live our best lives both today and in the future. Ahéhee’ (Thank you). Glory Tacheenie-Campoy (Diné)
Amerind seeks to foster and promote knowledge and understanding of the Native Peoples of the Americas through research, education, conservation, and community engagement. Indigenous Peoples bring vibrancy to the culture, art, and history of southern Arizona. At Amerind visitors discover and scholars advance research that showcases Indigenous voices through Amerind’s ever-growing museum collections, exhibits, Indigenous and regional art, archives, publications, and library holdings on Native Peoples, the Southwest United States, and Northern Mexico. Amerind’s collection includes a cross-section of ethnographic objects from the Western Hemisphere dating to the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Museum, art gallery, research center, and nature preserve, Amerind connects with over 17,000 annual visitors, in-person and online.
With our supportive community and your AZ Gives Day gift, Amerind's work is accomplished through:
RESEARCH: Scholarly Discovery & Educational Outreach Amerind is a respected academic resource, furthering understanding of the shared human story. Showcasing contributions from scholars and Indigenous Knowledge Keepers, anthropological research and our world-class collections informs all that we do from educational museum exhibits through public programming.
ARTS: Indigenous Contemporary Art and American Western Art Amerind's collections, mission, and the American Southwest are brought to life for the local and global community through Amerind's arts program. It is through art that we share beauty, inspiration, connection, and even process complex issues and topics. Economic and visibility opportunities for Indigenous artists alongside American Western art appreciation shape the themes and activities represented in our Fulton-Hayden Memorial Art Gallery exhibits.
NATURE: Texas Canyon Nature Preserve The Amerind Museum campus is 1,900 acres of pristine high desert grasslands and striking granite boulders, primarily closed to the public for 86 years. In 2023, we opened our scenic wonder to more visitors with nearly eight miles of public hiking and walking trails. Open for self-guided visits, the new trail system offers a community of hikers, birders, photographers, painters, and naturalists an opportunity to explore a unique high desert grassland with thriving native plant and animal species.
PRESERVATION: Historic Building Preservation Built between 1930 and 1958, Amerind’s historic facilities are at the heart of our mission. A treasure to be preserved, nurtured, and expanded, the restoration and modernization of our historic facilities is ongoing. Designed by renowned Southwest architect Merritt Howard Starkweather, our buildings represent the cultural heritage of our region alongside and protecting our collections.
