American Prairie Reserve will become the largest wildlife complex in the lower 48 states by linking together 3 million acres of private and public land on Montana's Great Plains. Scientists have identified only 4 places left in the world where we can conserve grasslands on a grand scale, and the American Prairie Reserve (APR) region presents the best potential in North America. National Geographic has honored the project by naming the Reserve "one of the most ambitious conservation projects in American history."

  • WILDLIFE HABITAT - By purchasing private land and linking it to existing public lands, APR is conserving the least protected habitat type in the world and its native species.
  • ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITIES - We aim to create a positive economic impact in the region through local spending, employment and developing tourism and business opportunities.
  • PUBLIC ENJOYMENT - APR is open to the public for a wide range of recreation and educational uses. Learn about visting, tours and volunteering on our website.

By helping us build the Reserve, you are inspiring new generations of explorers to visit and appreciate the landscape and wildlife of this uniquely American landscape. The Reserve is completely funded by private donors and foundations, and we've successfully:

  • Grown the Reserve to more than 274,000 acres
  • Reintroduced plains bison after a 120-year absence
  • Renovated a one-room schoolhouse
  • Restored riparian areas and expanded prairie dog towns
  • Improved public access and opened a campground
  • Hosted scientists and groups from around the world
  • Collaborated with experts from World Wildlife Fund and National Geographic.

With your help, we will leap into 2014 with the enthusiasm and support to:

  • Expand our wildlife-friendly beef program that benefits neighboring ranchers
  • Develop new recreation opportunities, like geocaching and hiking trails
  • Grow our bison herd to more than 300 animals
  • Glue together additional acres of habitat
  • Construct our first Conservation & Education center for visiting students and scientists
  • Remove 20 miles of fence that block wildlife movement
  • Launch an innovative 3-year citizen scientist program with volunteers
