4-H is the youth development education program of Cooperative Extension – a community of more than 100 public universities across the nation. 4-H serves youth age 5 – 19 and aims to teach them citizenship, leadership, and life skills through experiential learning in project areas like health, science, and agriculture.  Through 4-H, young people are encouraged to participate in "Hands On, Minds On" activities that emphasize 4-H's "learning by doing" philosophy of youth development.  Youth who participate in 4-H activities are nearly 4 times more likely to make contributions to their communities, about 2 times more likely to be civically active, nearly 2 times more likely to participate in science programs out of school, and are 2 times more likely to make healthier choices according to the 4-H Study of Positive Youth Development.

Fauquier County 4-H is home to 16 volunteer-led 4-H clubs which serve about 350 youth annually.  In addition to 4-H clubs, Fauquier County 4-H also offers summer camps, workshops, and school enrichment programs to serve an additional 5,100 youth annually in more short-term programming.
