What makes Barrio Gardens unique?
Barrios- and the Gardens they contain- are quintessentially Tucson; reflecting the values and traditions of our Mexican-American community while also expressing a personal, and popular, southwestern garden aesthetic. While each barrio garden is as individual as the abuela who grew it, the garden spaces are universally used as gathering places for families, to grow herbs for cooking, to display memorabilia, and as an expression of a family’s love of art. At the Tucson Botanical Gardens’ Nuestro Jardin, we frequently discover notes to lost loved ones, photographs and small objects placed on the altar, sitting on a table or hanging from a tree. It’s a place to discover people singing, playing guitar or simply sitting in quiet prayer and reflection. In a true Mexican-American Barrio Garden, it’s not just about the plants, it’s also about their lives and their familia.
Road Trip!
Help Tucson Botanical Gardens’ Barrio Garden Travel to our Nation’s Capital
The Tucson Botanical Gardens (TBG) has been invited to recreate their beloved Barrio Garden, Nuestro Jardin, and the rich local heritage that it represents, at the front steps of the United States Botanic Garden in Washington, D.C. June – October, 2019*.
In order to accomplish this goal, we need your support.
The Project
In late 2018, a call was sent out to over 800 botanical gardens throughout the country to create and install a garden at the U.S. Botanic Garden in Washington DC with the theme: Gardens Grow Diversity. We were selected as one of only 14 public gardens, to share our Barrio culture with the millions of guests who enjoy Washington DC over the summer.
Please help us celebrate Tucson’s traditional Mexican-American home gardens on a national stage – at the front door of the United States Botanic Garden, by giving a gift today.
